Title of Course Course Description
Diagnostic Coding & Procedural Coding This course covers the coding rules for the main coding systems used in the industry, such as the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). Payment systems are presented, such as diagnosis-related group (DRG), ambulatory payment classification (APC), and Resource Utilization Group (RUG). The course also reviews Medicare, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and preferred provider organizations (PPOs).
Medical Computer Skills

This course introduces and simulates situations using medical administrative software. Students learn to input patient information, schedule appointments, and handle billing. In addition, students produce various lists and reports and learn to handle insurance claims both on forms and electronically.

Electronic Health Records These two courses cover the use and management of health information and the electronic health record (EHR) to maintain patient records. Students will be trained to use EHR in any healthcare setting. The courses will provide students with a practical understanding of what EHR specialists do, and how important they are in the job market today.
Professional Insurance Processing

This course focuses on health care language in the rapidly changing insurance industry. Insurance terminology, types of insurance, and eligibility and benefit structures will be covered as well as Workers’ Compensation, TRICARE, Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance carriers, managed care plans, and cost containment issues. Medical Law and Ethics pertaining to health care providers and insurance companies will also be topics for discussion.

The classes at Seacoast provide students with the skills that they will need to succeed in a medical office environment. Seacoast’s coursework, including the hands-on experience that students receive during the externship program, prepares students to enter the workplace with medical knowledge, marketable skills, and a sense of confidence.
